Alaverdi cathedral is located in the village of the same name in 20 kilometers from Telavi. The cathedral is considered a shrine of Kakheti and the second tallest building in Georgia – it is 50 meters high. The cathedral is the center of Alaverdi diocese and the most worshipped saint place in Kakheti region.
A little bit of cathedral history
Alaverdi cathedral was built in the 11th century AD and is one of the best-preserved examples of mediaeval architecture.
However, the cathedral was restored two times. The first one was after an enemy attack in the 15th century. The second one – after an earthquake in the 18th century, when the cathedral was seriously damaged.
Alaverdi cathedral was built on the place of a small church that was named a church of Saint George. Many locals still call Alaverdi as a cathedral of Saint George.
How it looks like nowadays
The cathedral looks authentically, almost despite the restoration. It has been projected as a central dome building in a cruciate form.
As practically all Kakheti buildings, this one is decorated outside in a modest manner: just an ornamental carving – as a distinction of all Kakheti cathedrals. And on the inside there is a cathedral painting that has been made in the 15th century. Nowadays it is in a good condition.
